We ventured into Los Angeles to see “Gerhard Richter Painting,” which was a pleasant surprise. The sound of paint gliding over canvas surprises in its sensuality. His willingness, eagerness to “mutilate” his work to see what might emerge is inspiring (and a little frightening).
And on our way to the Griffith Park Observatory, we decided to swing by Ace Gallery. It’s housed inside this beautiful 1930s building:

It’s as beautiful inside as it is out.
And you can find gorgeous art like Mary Corse’s luminous work:
But on the way up and down, you might meet the delightful Ruben Pardo, Elevator Man Extraordinaire. He’ll proudly tell you about his profile in the Los Angeles Times, a copy of which hangs on the elevator wall. Ruben has been the building’s elevator operator for the past 35 years, and he’ll still greet you as warmly as you might imagine he has every single day.
“You can take a picture of it,” he urged, pointing to the article.
“I’d rather take a picture of you,” I said. And I did.

“You have a beautiful face,” I blurted out as I raised by phone to snap this quick photo.
“God made it!” Ruben exclaimed.
